Dental Implants

When Is the Right Age to Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a great alternative to dentures and bridges because they fuse with the jawbone to form a solid foundation to support one or more replacement teeth. This way, teeth remain permanently in your mouth, restoring oral function to nearly 100%.

Are you missing teeth in Rohnert Park, California, and think dental implants are a great option? There is no better office to have your smile restored with implants than Sonoma Smiles. Dr. Wayne Sutton has over 20 years of dental experience, so you can be assured of a superior outcome. With proper care, our dental implants last for life, but this leaves some patients “in my area,” asking whether there is an ideal age for getting implants.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically inserted in the jawbone to support one or more replacement teeth. Dental implants are structured like natural teeth, replacing the entire tooth from the crown to the root.

They restore your oral function, confidence, and aesthetics like you never lost teeth.

To successfully place an implant, you must have sufficient bone density. If tooth loss or gum disease has led to a loss of your jawbone tissue, you may be deemed ineligible for implants. However, a bone graft can effectively enhance and stabilize your bone, opening the door to implant candidacy.

Before & After Results

Is there a minimum age limit for dental implants?

There’s truly no minimum age for getting dental implants. However, dental implants are successfully placed where the jawbone has fully matured, which happens when you are around 18, although some people don’t attain this full skeletal development until their early 20s.

Strictly, age doesn’t rule you out from implantology. Our dentist must evaluate your jawbone to confirm or rule out your implant eligibility. We use dental X-rays and 3D scanning technology to examine your jawbone. Remember that an implant placed before the jawbone matures will cause health complications in the future, especially in orthodontics.

As long as you are in good overall health and have a healthy jawbone, you can get an implant even in your 70s, 80s, and 90s.
